This teaching explains that the gifts of the Holy Spirit—including tongues—are intended to remain active in the church until the return of Christ, not until the completion of the New Testament, as shown in 1 Corinthians 1:7, which teaches that believers are not to lack any spiritual gift while awaiting Christ’s revelation. Paul clarifies the nature of tongues in 1 Corinthians 14:2, stating that one who speaks in a tongue speaks to God and utters mysteries, distinguishing spiritual language from human language, a concept further illuminated by Paul’s experience of inexpressible words in 2 Corinthians 12:2–4. The instruction not to forbid tongues, while insisting on order and edification, is made explicit in 1 Corinthians 14:39–40, guarding against both chaos and spiritual suppression. The argument that gifts have ceased is refuted by the context of 1 Corinthians 13:8–12, where “the perfect” is identified as the return of Christ—when believers will see Him face to face—since faith and hope are still necessary in the present age. Finally, Paul’s reference to “tongues of men and of angels” in 1 Corinthians 13:1 emphasizes that spiritual gifts must always operate in love, or they become empty noise, reinforcing that authentic gifts glorify God, edify the church, and convict the unbeliever when practiced biblically.
